Documenta has seen its share of criticisms since its inception, but none have been more heated than those surrounding the most recent iteration. Spread across Athens and Kassel Documenta 14 happened to coincide with larger debates about the German austerity measures aimed at countries like Greece. For many, this context surrounding Adam Szymczyk’s ambitious pro- gramme threatened to overshadow the actual works. For others, Documenta 14 was more than just a lightning rod – it marked a turning point in the trajectory of the large scale exhibition.
