“Stolen Arab Art” (2018) at 1:1 Center for Art and Politics, Tel Aviv

In 2018 an art space in Tel Aviv showed video art by Arab artists without their consent. In the climate of the cultural boycott against Israel, they would have been unlikely to grant it. But did this legitimise theft? Commentators on social media were quick to dismiss the exhibition, which was idealistically intended as a way to use art to imagine another, more open Middle East.
