Originally intended for the cover of a French lifestyle magazine LV Shoes for Double was rejected on the grounds that it was "too commercial". It is precisely this suspension between commercial and artistic photography that runs characteristically through the work of Roe Etheridge. It’s like high-end glamour meets casual charm. Fashion shoots hang beside formal still lifes, alongside enlarged, pixelated images off the internet, and details of interiors or street scenes. Ethridge draws from an archive of self-produced and found images which he combines and recontextualises in a visual fugue - "fugueing out" he calls it.
Roe Ethridge was born in 1969 in Miami, Florida and lives in New York.
