Going out in Basel

Seven recommendations by SALTS

1. BREAKFAST
"Da Graziella" at Feldbergstrasse (the original) is probably the best known Cafe in town. Home-baked Italian specialties made in house will make you come back day after day after day.

2. LUNCH
For the best burgers in town, we go to Stefan Grieder and Jérome Beurret's "Rhyschänzli"; they serve a yummy Cevapcici burger at a buvette by the river, right next to Klingental neighbourhood. It's hard to understand why no one has yet thought about putting this Balkan speciality in a bun and serve it with Ajvar on top. If you prefer your classic Bacon and Cheese Burger, we recommend "UNION" Restaurant or Diner downtown before watching a movie at a local cinema.

3. INFORMAL DINNER
Another Italian institution is "Gatto Nero", a small restaurant around the corner from "Da Graziella". Intimate, delicious and with a personal touch, this little gem seduces with its authentic local feel-good kitchen.

4. FORMAL DINNER
If you're ready to splash out, we recommend to book a table at "Bon Vivant". The loft-style atmosphere of this former silk ribbon factory is very fashionable and the former Michelin star cook and his partner have decided to stop chasing stars and focus on developing new flavours inspired by traditional Mediterranean cuisine, with fresh, locally sourced ingredients. There is no menu to choose from, the chefs will select a set of dishes for you.

5. BEST SAUSAGES!
Each year, SALTS is hosting a garden party during the Art Basel week, arguably serving the best sausages in town (it's worth mentionning SALTS is located in an old butcher shop). On 18 June, we are opening three exhibitions; a site-specific project by Nicolas Party, an immersive performance evening with 12 different artists, as well as an historic show mapping digital poetry from the 1990s to 2001.

6. DRINKS
Go enjoy the relaxed and quiet atmosphere of "Marina Bar", sitting in the industrial port of Basel, on a former Esso property, where one can watch the local skaters at the local skate park or head over to Swiss artist Sandra Knecht’s new art project turned cooking adventure, Der Chnächt, a food truck serving homely food all summer. Also, you'll catch the best sunset there, while listening to live music, away from the bustle of town.

7. DAYTRIP - The Wildenstein Oak trees.
For a wonderful day out of town, go see some of the oldest oak trees in the region. To get there, take a bus towards "Bubendorf", stop "Wildenstein" and look for the Wildenstein park. There you can wander among 600-800 year old trees in a setting unlike any other.

SALTS supports young international artists to develop unique and exceptional projects. Since 2009, the exhibitions have often materialised site-specifically, in varied forms of media, always with the goal to push beyond the artists' daily practice, while challenging the audience. Today SALTS is run by Samuel Leuenberger and Elise Lammer. www.salts.ch
