"Across the street from the sprawling, majestic Frank Walter show on view at the MMK (“Frank Walter: A Retrospective”, up until 15 November) is something of a companion piece to the late Antiguan and Barbudan artist, mostly unknown in his lifetime, but who has gained significant recognition since his death. The installation “Earthseed”, by New York-based poet and artist, Precious Okoyomon (*1993), consists of an entire room filled with growing kudzu vines (Resistance is an atmospheric condition, all works 2020), and six figures who populate the greenery (Open circle Lived Relation), composed of sullied wool, dirt, and wire. “Earthseed” is located in the single-room satellite space of the MMK, in the former Frankfurt Zollamt (customs office), a place once given over to the vagaries of bureaucratic border control – importing and exporting, deciding what belongs in the country, and what faces either rejection, or a steep fine."
