Workshop: “How to Make A Zine in One Day” by Dan Solbach

Self-publish or perish! Swiss book designer and graphic artist Dan Solbach (*1987) instructed students on a DIY approach to art publication, from concept to design to production (copied and/or digitally printed): how to edit texts (with input from Spike editors), how to create titles, teasers, credits, and bios, how to format images, how to create a layout, how to bind a zine, and much more.

DAN SOLBACH (born 1987) is a book designer and graphic artist. Solbach has designed catalogs such as The Playground Project, published by Kunsthalle Zürich and JRP Ringier, Zurich, 2016; Kounellis, published by White Cube, London, 2017; and Our Sun, by Pamela Rosenkranz, published by Istituto Svizzero and Mousse, Milan, 2010. He also created the visual identity and the catalog for “Produktion. Made in Germany Drei,” a joint exhibition by the Kestnergesellschaft, Kunstverein, and Sprengel Museum, Hanover (2017). Other partners include the Bundeskunsthalle, Bonn; Gavin Brown’s Enterprise, New York; Le Magasin, Grenoble; and mumok, Vienna. Since 2014, he has been art director of the Berlin-based magazine Starship Magazine. He lives in Berlin.
