Round Table CANCEL CULTURE

Spike is pleased to invite you to

CANCEL CULTURE

a roundtable discussion with

Krist Gruijthuijsen, Mathieu Malouf, and Nina Power

moderated by Laurie Rojas

For Spike’s 60th issue on "immorality of the art world" we are organising a roundtable discussion that will address Cancel Culture from various perspectives.

Moving beyond a mere for/against approach to the question we seek to address why is cancel culture even happening and why now? Is the art world responding differently to these issues than the entertainment or publishing industry, has cancel culture become as dominant as in other industries, or is somehow the art world protecting its artists/producers/power players better?

What are the deeper considerations when discussing the nuances of the different cases in recent months? In what ways has the art world gained or lost moral authority through these actions? And have these actions changed anything at all other than where the money and attention goes?

And, what is at risk when art as such is subjected to moralising judgments?

Krist Gruijthuijsen is Director of KW Institute for Contemporary Art and lives in Berlin.

Mathieu Malouf is an artist and lives in New York.
