If history were written solely by the victors, the world would soon forget about the militant environmental activists of the 1990s. On both sides of the Atlantic, radical grassroots movements wanted to do their bit to save the planet, or at least a corner of it, from looming ecological catastrophe. Do old stories of arson, idealism, and state repression have anything to offer for the kinds of protest happening today?\
