“While my Portuguese is improving, I still have to really concentrate to be able to follow a conversation. As such, when in São Paulo, I live an oddly alienated existence; other people’s chatter – on the metro system, in cafés, and in supermarkets – is indecipherable background noise. This most noisy of cities, in which people habitually prize apartments above the fifth floor, is a strangely silent one for me and this spurs me on with my lessons. The relationship between sound and language, power and subjugation, lies at the heart of this group exhibition, convened by Jacopo Crivelli Visconti, as a precursor to the Bienal de São Paulo, featuring twenty-one of the ninety artists who will feature is his main show, now postponed to 2021.”
